I sat quietly, watching my granddaughter blowing bubbles on the deck overlooking the Kiawah marsh. The air was soft with salt and late afternoon sunlight, the marsh grass bending in rhythm with the incoming tide. As she spun, releasing each bubble, her face was serious concentration one moment and then joyful glee the next. Some bubbles drifted high and free, while others popped as soon as they left her wand. Each bubble carried its own small shimmer, catching light before disappearing.
In that moment, as a child was captivated by these effervescent orbs, I realized how much bubbles resemble life. Brief and fragile yet shining, momentary yet rich with meaning, simple yet profound, and by their very impermanence they carry a radiance that makes them unforgettable. A 7-year-old’s joy and those bubbles were the stimulus for this morning’s M5T.
1. LIGHTNESS IS A SKILL. Bubbles rise because they’re virtually all air. They don’t cling, they don’t drag, and they don’t carry extra weight. In life, we often load ourselves down with unnecessary weight of worries, grudges, fears, overcommitments, and digital clutter. Learning to let go isn’t just a philosophy. It’s a practiced skill. The lighter you move through the week, the more energy you have for what truly matters in your life. What could you set down today so you can rise a little higher?
2. FRAGILITY ISN’T WEAKNESS. A bubble doesn’t last long, but while it’s here it shimmers, dances, and catches the eye of anyone who notices. Some people think fragility is weakness, but fragility often invites presence. Preciousness comes from scarcity. A good conversation, a walk with someone you love, or a perfect cup of coffee. None of those last long, but they matter. A lot. Instead of avoiding what’s fleeting, lean into it. Enjoy the sparkle while it’s here.
3. SURFACE SHOWS THE SPECTRUM. When you look closely, the soap film of a bubble bends light into full rainbows. That beauty is hidden until just the right light and angle reveal it. Our daily lives are the same. We often miss color because we’re rushing, but when we slow down, ordinary things refract brilliance. A smile from a stranger, the green of a tree, the way sunlight hits your desk, your partner reaching for your hand, or a friend stepping up to help without being asked. Gratitude is essentially learning to notice the spectrum of life in all its beauty on the surface of the ordinary.
4. BOUNDARIES MAKE BUOYANCY. A bubble only exists because of its boundary. A delicate skin that gives shape, twinkle, and lift to what would otherwise be invisible air. Without it, there is nothing to see, nothing to rise. Life isn’t any different. Boundaries aren’t barriers. Boundaries are the architecture of energy, clarity, and presence. They give your days form, your work direction, and your relationships depth. Saying no isn’t selfish. It’s the self-restraint that safeguards your integrity and preserves your focus. Protecting your calendar, your mental space, and your values is not retreat. It’s disciplined refinement. Boundaries don’t diminish freedom. They create it. Boundaries allow you to move with intention, not drift without shape, rising in the direction of how you want to live your life, not by the dictates of others.
5. POP IS PART OF THE PROCESS. Bubbles live on borrowed time. Even with a finite life, they glisten, they float, and they dance in the light. Then with a soft pop, they vanish. Yet we never stop blowing more bubbles. Life works the same way. Projects collapse, plans unravel, people pass away unexpectedly, relationships shift and end. What once seemed permanent proves to be fragile. What seems solid can be found to be built on an unsteady foundation. But fragility isn’t failure. It’s part of the cycle and rhythm of life. Instead of fearing the pop, embrace it. Every ending opens space for a new beginning. Every collapse clears the air for another attempt. Renewal is stitched into the very fabric of loss and failure. Resilience isn’t about being unbreakable or infallible. It’s about how quickly, gracefully, and even playfully you can pick yourself up and start again when you stumble and fall. Life is less about avoiding the pop, and more about finding joy in blowing the next bubble.
Here's to a week that’s like a bubble. Light, colorful, shaped by healthy boundaries, and ready to alter your direction when life inevitably shifts.
